With the coming out of the literary text Shining Sword, the spirit of "shining sword" comes into people's attention. In fact, the spirit of "shining sword" is in line with the serviceman spirit and the fighting spirit. Its essence is gradually outlined by the development of the military practice. It is such a special spirit which comes into its form during people's upholding their noble beliefs, safeguarding just causes and realizing ambitious dreams. It is a vital element for a successful war as well as a spiritual base for soldiers to fight dauntlessly. In today's world, peace and development are still the mainstream. However, wars, whose root doesn't vanish, still linger. With the support of foreign reactionary forces towards China, the secessionists propagandizing Taiwan Independence, Tibet Independence and Xinjiang Independence become more violent, which poses potential hazard to China's stability. Therefore, it is beyond argument that we should take further steps in national defense education, especially the cultivation of the spirit of "shining sword". The increasing awareness of national defense in the public would definitely make people be prepared for war with higher morale. As an important role in national defense education, higher learning institutions should attach more importance to the cultivation of the spirit of "shining sword". This thesis consists of five parts. Chapter one is exordium, which introduces the cause, status quo, goal, significance and researching method of this thesis. In chapter two, the essence, features as well as cultivation of the spirit of "shining sword" are elaborately revealed. Chapter three analyzes the status quo of the cultivation of the spirit of "shining sword" in higher learning institutions, mainly focusing on the cultivation models of the spirit of "shining sword" in armies home and aboard. A summary of the successful experiments in the cultivation of the spirit of "shining sword" in higher learning institutions is given. Shortcomings are also presented. Chapter four illustrates some detailed channels and methods for the cultivation of the spirit of "shining sword" in higher learning institutions. Four principles for the cultivation is introduced, namely principle of guidance with teaching, principle of stimulus with target, principle of demonstration with model and principle of experience with practice. Chapter five presents the conclusion and some issues in need of further research.
