This dissertation focuses on the practical application of criminal profiling in China. According to John Douglas, an American criminologist, each human being will form a special pattern of behavior and thought due to influences of the family, education and other aspects in the society. Meanwhile, this pattern of behavior and thought has the feature of stability and habitualness, which is the criminal personality in criminology. The criminal personality could reflect the psychological character and personality of the criminal suspect in every particular case. Therefore, by analysis of the criminal personality, the features of a suspect'age, gender, occupation, race, education could be available and the characteristics of a suspect'family, habits of life, manner of living, interpersonal relations and social status also could be obtainable. The process of the foregoing analysis is the criminal profiling.Criminal profiling, which originates in1860s—1870s, plays a growing crucial role in the criminal cases investigation. The reason is that the profiling could narrow down the scope of suspects, provide a new clue and find out relations between the related cases.This thesis starts with an introduction to basic theory and localized development of the criminal profiling. Then the dissertation looks into inductive and deductive research methods as well as the practices of investigation. In addition, the research essay points out the issues in the practices and puts forward possible solutions in order to strengthen the prevention from the criminal offences.The first part is to illustrate basic theories and backgrounds of the criminal profiling. The thesis makes a brief introduction to definition of criminal profiling, explaining the rational of this concept from two aspects of behaviorism and criminal psychology. The historical evolution and present situation of criminal profiling are also discussed.The second part is to analyze two basic and crucial research methods: inductive and deductive criminal profiling. By exploring the theory assumption, practical value and practices of the two methods, the research paper discusses two methods'own features, advantages and defects respectively. Stress would be laid on the combination of inductive and deductive criminal profiling.The third part plans to discuss the application of criminal profiling in criminal cases investigation. The paper identifies three fundamental conditions of profiling based on the analysis of conditions, matters needing attention and operating procedures. Particularly, this thesis focuses on the target application and meaning of the profiling in matters needing attention. Meanwhile, modus operandi and Signature behavior are also covered in the paper. Furthermore, the research introduces the specific application methods and steps of profiling by setting examples of the FBI's the analysis of the crime scene, two kinds of international methods of criminal profiling.The forth part mainly looks into the application situation and issues in the practices of the criminal profiling in China. The paper takes the position that the lack of a national criminal information system, feed-back of data and verification of the information are the primary concerns. In the end, in order to strengthen the localized development of criminal profiling and improve the crime scene investigation efficiency, this dissertation frames the conclusion by putting forward suggestions and possible solutions against issues above mention.
