Study On The Viewpoint In Contemporary Literature Criticism Towards Appreciation Of The Ugliness

Appreciation of the ugliness is the important phenomenon in the end of20th century in Chinese literature. It triggers a new thinking about "Beauty" and "Ugliness" and triggers the research about ugliness. For nearly three decades, the research of ugliness developed rapidly, but there was a problem: more scholars paid their attentions to the ugliness and the phenomenon of judging ugliness and small part focused on the critics point of view about the ugliness. According to this situation, the paper wants to study the critics point of view from four aspects-the history of the appreciation of the ugliness and its highlight show in contemporary; Implication of contemporary view of critics about appreciation of the ugliness; Type analysis; Value and limitations.Chapter one states the history of the appreciation of the ugliness, its highlight show in contemporary. There are close connections between the meaning of ugliness, evil, birdy and fear in etymology. Ugliness was not noticed by ancient scholars. Until the Qing dynasty, ugliness was introduced as the term of literary criticism in Liu Xizai's "Yi Gai". Up to modern times, the research on ugliness has arisen. The central point shifts from "beatifying ugliness" to "treating ugliness as beauty".Chapter two focuses on the implication of contemporary view of critics to the ugliness. From the angles of psychology, critics analyse the inner emotions constitution of the ugliness. From the angles of human cognitive development, critics analyse the relation between ugliness and human cognitive development. From the angles of language and narration of novel, they analyse the subversiveness of ugliness. In addition,"emotion-free " was emphasized as the distinctive feature of appreciation of the ugliness.Chapter three discusses the type of the critics point of view about the ugliness based on chapter two. There are three main types:Sun Shaozhen and Nan Fan are positive of the ugliness because they think it has its unique charm; Xie Youshun and Li Jianjun are against the appreciation of the ugliness because they think it may lead to the collapse of the whole moral system; Hong Zhigang and Sun Yu attempt to judge the phenomenon objectively.Chapter four discusses specially the value and limitations of the critics point of view about the ugliness. For the research of ugliness, the discussion offers strong support to prove its rationality and causes some new problems. For the practice of writing, the discussion points out the direction for the writers and influences their creation attitude. For the reader, the discussion arouses introspection about negativity of human nature and human state of being. Certainly, the discussion still has some limitations.
