Ernest Hemingway is one of the most famous novelists in the world. The Old Man and the Sea won E. Hemingway the Nobel Prize in 1954 and was considered the best work in his literary career. Before eco-criticism was born, the well-known work The Old Man and the Sea had been interpreted by critics from different angles. In fact, it was often appreciated from a nihilist point of view or an unyielding man point of view, giving more attention to its artistic feature.Popular in China from the beginning of the 21st century, eco-criticism is becoming a new current in the field of criticism nowadays. More and more people start to reconsider and review E. Hemingway's great work, The Old Man and the Sea, from ecological point of view.This thesis consists of three parts. The first part is an"Introduction", which gives a brief overview of the main points of the thesis. Part two consists of three chapters, which are"A Brief Overview of Eco-criticism","A Brief Introduction of Ernest Hemingway"and"Interpreting The Old Man and the Sea from Eco-critical perspective". Chapter three is the most important one of this thesis. The last part is the conclusion of this thesis. The main purpose of this thesis is to reveal the ecological ideas hiding between the lines of The Old Man and the Sea and then wake up people's awareness of protecting nature.
