A Study Of Deviated Rhetoric-Based On Potential Logical Rules

Compared with conventional rhetoric, deviated rhetoric refers to the special language expressions, which violate the conventions and rationality. Based on the theories of potential logic, this thesis aims to explore and analyze deviated rhetoric from three main aspects respectively. It firstly illustrates the logical properties and bases of deviated rhetoric; then it discusses the potential logic of deviated rhetoric in a broad sense; and then it attempts to make a logical argumentation of deviated rhetoric devices in a narrow sense.The logic properties and bases of deviated rhetoric will be discussed from four aspects: the definition of deviated rhetoric, the generative mechanism of deviated rhetoric, the characteristics of deviated rhetoric, and the explicit logic and potential logic used in deviated rhetoric. The thesis holds that the generation of deviated rhetoric is not drawn apart from human s subjective intention, associations and emotions. Deviated rhetoric is always the externalization of human s emotion, and its generation is a process of variation from content to form which is decided by the user s thinking and emotions. When the rhetorical subject is in the state of strong feelings, the impulse of emotion causes a psychological mutation of the rhetoric subject; the psychological mutation results in the perceptual mutation, which causes thinking mutation; then the thinking mutation gives rise to the rationality and the violation of convention in language use. All these mutations take place under the human s thinking of potential consciousness. Meanwhile, the thesis insists that not only the law of the potential logic can be employed in deviated rhetoric, but also the law of explicit logic is workable in it. Since deviated rhetoric is produced under human s thinking of potential consciousness, the thinking laws of potential consciousness are one of the research subjects of the potential logics. Thus, the analysis based on the potential logic will better explore the essential nature and the generative mechanism of the deviated rhetoric. Besides, the thesis also reveals the characteristics of deviated rhetoric which lie in deviation, misplacement and aestheticism. Deviation shows that the surface structure of deviated rhetoric disobeys the requirements for convention and formal logic compared to convention. The language expressions which have a low frequency of use are considered as deviation to convention; misplacement refers to misplaced expressing forms in deviated rhetoric between deep structure and surface structure; Aestheticism lies in the esthetic information and emotions which are embodied in deviated rhetoric.The most important part presents in the potential logic of deviated rhetoric. This part aims to analyze the potential logic laws that deviated rhetoric mainly follows. The generation of deviated carries on under the thinking of potential consciousness, therefore, the thinking of deviated rhetoric is mainly a potential one. The laws it abide by are the potential ones, i.e., the laws of potential logic. Laws of potential logic contain law of similitude, law of freedom, law of ambiguity and law of accident. The support of deviated rhetoric can be found in the laws of potential logic, which provides a much more profound theoretical basis for deviated rhetoric. In the law of similitude, the similitude of things and the similitude of feeling are discussed, which shows that deviated rhetoric takes the similitude as the identity or sameness. The principles of non-contradiction, zero-difference and free space-time in law of freedom show that deviated rhetoric describes things and expresses concept regardless of the contradiction, difference, and space-time. Law of ambiguity presents that the concept and things deviated rhetoric express are always not exact but vague and ambiguous, which throw light on the beauty of the language. Law of accident makes the activities of potential consciousness generate numerous accidental outcomes from the same starting point, and the outcomes are unpredictable. Under the control of law of accident, the generation of deviated rhetoric is abrupt. From the viewpoint of time, deviated rhetoric is paroxysmal; while from the viewpoint of effect, it is unexpected. Meanwhile, deviated rhetoric bypasses the inference process to achieve a leap of thinking, and then mutant and novel forms of language appear, which actually belongs to the typical deviated rhetoric.The argumentation of deviated rhetoric is finally presented from the point view of micro-angle. The thesis aims to distinguish four pairs of deviated rhetoric devices: catchword repetition and regression, interrelating and nonce word, pun and euphemism, ontological metaphor and metonymy, which are easily blurred and misused by people from the angle of logical and aesthetic particularities. The thesis holds that only by a good understanding of the logic particularities and aestheticism of the language expressions, can the implied meaning of the deviated rhetoric be exactly comprehended.
