Abstract/Summary:
Because of its cross-cultural nature, translation has absorbed many theoriesfrom other fields in the process of establishing its own theoretical framework, especially from the field of text linguistics. As a branch of linguistics, text linguisticsdeals with texts as communication systems. With more and more linguists andtranslators realize the importance of text, the text-linguistic model of translationgradually replaced traditional approaches. Coherence, as a decisive factor indistinguishing a text from a non-text, undoubtedly becomes a criterion for evaluatingadequate translation.Based on Zhang Delu's viewpoint on factors affecting textual coherence, thepresent author lays emphasis on cohesion as inner factor and cultural context andsituational context as outer factors in this thesis. According to the discussions on theresults of translation task and questionnaires, this thesis displayed the factorsdetermining textual coherence in the translation assignments of MTI and presented adetailed analysis of the causes of the status quo. Finally, the present author suggestsseveral solutions to the current state on the basis of the above analysis. This dissertation consists of five chapters in total. Chapter one is a generalintroduction to the study and the overall structure of the dissertation. Then chaptertwo concerns with the theoretical framework for the present study. It is designed togive the overviews of text and coherence respectively, review the previous studies ontextual coherence in translation, and present the realization of textual coherence employed in this dissertation. Chapter three is devoted to presenting the researchmethods. It examines the current state of textual coherence in students' translationassignments by translation task and questionnaires. Chapter four is the detaileddiscussion based on the statistical results of data analysis. It will be carried out byanswering to the three questions proposed before the research. Chapter five brings thisdissertation to a conclusion.
