In the modern translation field, there are usually two respective understandings of translation:some people believe that translation is a practical activity and it doesn't matter if there is any theoretical support; while some others think that translation can be an art or a science, so perceptual recreation of art or the theoretical basis and categories should be stressed. In fact, to be objective, translation is actually an activity which stresses practice. However, the theorization and systematization of the translation research are really of great help to translation practice. In this thesis, the author tries to combine translation practice and relevant theories by analyzing the Chinese translation of English movie reviews, especially some reviews in The New York Times on the basis of the skopostheorie. Therefore, by studying the skopostheorie, translators can make movie review translation more practical and meaningful. Meanwhile, the quality of the translation practice can be improved by applying the skopostheorie. And what's more, the author also wants to see how translation theories can be applied to movie review translation.Movies, like TV, Internet and the press media, are a mainstream medium in the modern world. The New York Times is also a mainstream media corporation in the United States, which is the producer of most of the world's movies. The movie reviews in The New York Times not only focus on American movies but also pay much attention to various kinds of movies globally. Apart from the critiques and the introductions of movies, people can learn more about culture and background knowledge. So the movie reviews attract a lot of film fans or film makers and they can be, to some extent, the guidance for the audience including the Chinese audience who try to keep pace with the world. The most popular movie magazine in China now is The Movie View, which often quotes a lot from its American counterparts. The author believes that if we can translate some movie reviews in The New York Times well and then make the translated versions published in The Movie View, we may be helpful to Chinese audience and film makers in this way. Thus we can also realize the value of applying the skopostheorie to translation practice.
