Film is western products. It's influenced by Chinese traditional culture after introduced to China, and is marked with deep national identities under the influence of the Chinese traditional aesthetics. It's not a new topic to study Chinese film through Chinese traditional aesthetics. At present, most of studies to Chinese film is from the stand point of film imagery and film artistic conception. It would be another possible method to explore the essence of movies through the traditional aesthetic thought, as image thought of film is similar to the thought of "image" in Chinese traditional aesthetics. And this will promote the study of Chinese film. The difference and similarity between western and eastern art thought are the source of conflict but also combinaties between image esthetics, which is influenced by Chinese "image" thought. It's helpful to research the relationship of Chinese traditional image aesthetics and nowadays film theory by analyzing above two theories as well as specific movies. To study the relationship of image aesthetics and film theory, we can start from "step up image to show meaning". They are opposite as well as unified, conflicting as well as consolidated. Nowadays directors, Zhang Yimou and Jia Zhangke, are respectively the representative of the fifth and sixth generation directors. The styles of their movies creation are typical in some degree, and reflect the aligned and subtle relationship of image aesthetics and Chinese film creation from a different perspective. The color use and appearance design in Zhang Yimou's films is in the form of "image implied meaning", while in Jia Zhangke's films, the film structure, objects and selection character sequences, etc. is in the form of "image interested meaning". Film images is similar to the aesthetics theory of "view object to get image" and "step up image to show meaning" in image aesthetics, which show that it's reasonable and possible to explore the essence of movies through the traditional aesthetic thought. And it's considerable and significative to study film basing on the way of combining western and eastern, ancient and modern.
