Research On Zhang Yimou's Use Of Rhetoric Of Film

The rhetoric of film is an important technique commonly used in making films. It can produce shock and influence on the audience and can also construct the inner implication of the film. Thus we can say both the creators and receivers can take the rhetoric of film as a method to produce and appreciate film, since it not only realizes the form beauty but also express the implied meaning.Through organizing other's research achievements of Zhang Yimou's films and combining contemporary scientific research of the theory of the rhetoric in film, this thesis draws a conclusion that Zhang's achievements are based on his successful use of rhetoric in film on the basis of careful analysis of Zhang's films.Zhang's rhetoric in film has distinct artistic features which can be divided into threeaspects. First, he flexibly takes advantage of two specific rhetoric elements--distinctcolor combination and hierarchical organization, to form special visual and audio shock. Secondly, he uses close-ups to demonstrate the idea and soul, stresses to strengthen the tendency of the theme and comparison to present the implied moral. By the use of these techniques, he wins the approval and echo of the audience. Lastly, on the basis of using various rhetoric elements and devices, especially metaphor and symbolization, he imparts rich cultural connotation in the films and extend the moral of them. This makes the audience enjoys the strong cultural atmosphere as well as the joy of appreciation. The audience will extend the moral of film and further realize rhetoric exploration by combining their own anticipation and "expectation horizon".Zhang's rhetoric use in film realizes the expression of meaningful form beauty. The following are four aspects of significance of his use of rhetoric in film. Firstly, his films construct poetic sentiments through poetic processing of everyday life and the poetic filling in the frame of the ancient stories. Secondly, his films explore the cultural implication through the demonstration and criticism of national culture and portrayal of humanity. Thirdly, he makes the audience enjoy the joy of appreciating beauty in the activity of further constructing rhetoric of film. Lastly, the distinct artistic features form a cultural brand of Zhang Yimou's films and ensure the realization of the market value.The creative strategies of Zhang's films include three parts. First, he searches for the emotional echo of the audience in ordinary stories. Second, he applies the "spectacle" way in producing process. Third, he calls the audience to fulfill the film with their own understanding. The inner driving force of creativeness is Zhang's individual pursuit of art and the outer driving force is the needs of the audience.
