Zhang Wei's works exerts a profound influence on the history of Contemporary Literature. In nearly four decades, his works started from focusing on and eulogizing the rural life enthusiastically to looking social changes deeply; then, returned to search the beauty of the countryside and the culture of the land for the cultural and spiritual roots. The change process of his creative spirit reflects not only the growth and maturity of his thinking and creation, but also to some extent the spirit process of the contemporary Chinese intellectuals in four decades. Zhang Wei and his works has become symbols of era spirit.In this paper, by reviewing Zhang Wei's works in four decades and analyzing his creative characteristics, the spiritual direction of his works and creative change are explored. According to characteristics of his creation, three periods are defined:First, eulogizing the rural life enthusiastically; second, criticizing and fighting with the society and advocating moral idealism; third, retreating to the land as a spiritual watcher. On light of the specific works, these three creative stages are analyzed for exploring their spiritual characteristics in detail, and thus the spirit pass of his creative process is teased out, namely, poetically focusing on the unity of man and nature--digging the tension between human nature and social critically—retreating and speculating the conflicts between nature and the society. Simultaneously, the factors leading to changes of his creative spirit is analyzed.Inducing and analyzing the personality of Zhang Wei's creation in contemporary cultural context, not only can reveal the complex relation between his literary world and the contemporary society, but also explore the era sense to construct the spiritual life of contemporary people.
