Chinese and western paintings have developed into two entirely different systems after ten thousand years from ancient time until now. Philosophy, as the theoretical form of the world perspective, has greatly influence paintings, and two different world perspectives lead to different characteristics of the Chinese and western paintings.At first, the world's philosophy has formed two main directions, which is, the traditional Chinese thought of "master virtue" and the Western world thought of "the main intellectual". In Chinese feudal history which is two thousand years, the philosophy of virtue still exists; in Western the philosophy spring from ancient Greece period, and since then it has the respects for science, knowledge, spirit of inquiry, in different historical stages, the Western world has came out new philosophy master and new ideas, but the fundamental scientific properties remains unchanged. Philosophical differences which affect the basic characteristics of Western painting are not the same.Because of the Lord Howard thought of Chinese traditional philosophy, the development of Chinese painting has always pursued inheritance and the beauty of artistic conception. Depiction is the main method of Chinese painting study, and forms a set of patterned Chinese paintings study method. After the painters' inheritance, a guide book on the art of drawing or painting, which explains Chinese painting techniques and theory of painting, didn't emerge until the mustard garden of the early Qing dynasty as the times required. It was copied many times and enduring. Many modern Chinese masters start out on the way of learning Chinese paintings with depicting the mustard garden. Then let's have a look at the history of western painting, which from the start analysis the described object in a rational and objective angle. "Reproduction" of the objective existence is the main characteristics of western painting basis, and this is the direct or indirect effect of western philosophical spirit. Bridgman's Complete Guide to Drawing from Life is a basic course of the western painting, which explains theories profound human muscle and bone structure and scale in simple language. It was introduced into China in the 1960 s, as a classic book of Chinese students who learning the western painting. The painting learning method explained in this book can reflect western rational spirit everywhere, and presented the different face the Chinese learning methods of painting. There are some similarities still have many differences between the mustard garden and Bridgman's Complete Guide to Drawing from Life. At first glance there is no comparability between two books. The first is a Chinese painting picture collection, It Is about birds and flowers, landscape, figure, building the painting step, together with copies of past masters masterpieces. It is also cited the comment on the famous classical painting. The second is a painting methods textbook which purely explained human structure, proportion and observation. The two works reflect the different characteristics of Chinese and western paintings in learning methods and expression skills. The Chinese painting focuses on"search all rough after draft"and pay attention to the" transfer modifying", and the pursuit of "lively"; the western paintings emphasize the livings and are based on sketch to anatomy and perspective, with the pursuit of true representations. This sort of difference is actually the embodiment of the differences between Chinese and western world perspectives.It is concluded that the mustard garden and Bridgman's Complete Guide to Drawing from Life, as two symbols, reflect the difference of philosophy and aesthetics thought between Chinese and western .As a result, the paper will talk about the different characteristics of Chinese and Western paintings from the world perspectives.
