The thesis aims at the verification research methods in the teaching model under constructivism and development of the English major students'competence. It has made an attempt on the intensive English teaching in combination of the quantitative and qualitative approach to the students of class 1, grade 2008, which is an experimental one where the constructivist teaching model is applied, and the students of class 2, grade 2008, which is a control one where the traditional teaching model is observed in school of foreign languages at Jia Musi University. The experiment time begins in the autumn semester of 2009. The grades and learning autonomy of the students who are separately from the experimental class and control class are pre-tested and post-tested, and the results are statistically analyzed by SPSS. The students from the experimental class are about to be interviewed with the results to which the qualitative approach is applied by the descriptive method.The results of the experiment have revealed that the grades and learning autonomy of the experimental class are obviously higher than those of the control class. The students prefer the constructivist teaching model. The constructivist teaching model is feasible to the development of the English major students'competence.
