Rebecca is the masterpiece of Daphne du Maurier. By blending feelings and settings, she successfully portrays two kinds of atmosphere: one is the sad and sentimental memories of the past; the other is the gloomy and depressive fear. Scholars have done a great deal research on this novel and have made a lot of achievements. But they have rarely interpreted the novel from the perspective of cognitive linguistics. Thus, the author tries to classify and analyze fear expressions in it, adopting the theories of conceptual metaphor and emotional metaphor from the perspective of cognitive linguistics in order to extend the research areas of literature works and prove the natures of emotional metaphor: cognition, embodiment and interactivity. Moreover, taking the Chinese edition of Rebecca as the research material, this thesis is also an attempt to apply foreign linguistic theories to the study of the Chinese language. |
