Nantong is located in north-central of Jiangsu Province. It crosses the Jianghuai Mandarin area and the Wu dialect area. As a combined point of the Jianghuai Mandarin and the Wu dialect, Nantong dialect shares a very special place and significance in Chinese dialects research. It is a hybrid of the northern Mandarin Chinese and the Wu dialect, which has a closer genetic relationship with the northern Mandarin Chinese. In this paper, Nantong dialect is compared with the other three dialects of Nantong area based on the study of Nantong Dialect to reveal the phonological features and the evolution characteristics of Nantong dialect.This article is divided into four chapters. The first chapter outlines the main situation of Nantong, the formation process and the regionalization of Nantong dialect. The second chapter describes the phonetic system and the internal differences of Nantong dialect. The third chapter compares Nantong dialect with Beijing dialect and the ancient Chinese mainly from sound, rhyme and stress. Meanwhile, it analyses the corresponding relationship of Nantong dialect and the ancient Chinese. The fourth chapter compares Natong Dialect with other two main dialects(Ruhai dialect, Tongdong dialect and Qihai dialect) of Nantong area. It further explores the evolution characteristics and ownership of Nantong dialect on the basis of revealing the similarities of the four dialects.
