Erhu teaching is a significant part of the instrumental teaching and a professional-skill course of the compulsory courses in Senior-vocational art colleges of higher education. In other words, Erhu-teaching plays a vital role in the art colleges and the erhu-teaching methods contain its own features. Erhu teaching began in the 1920s, the period of Liu Tianhua, became popular in the 1980s in vocational art schools. Since most of the colleges were upgraded from secondary art school, the teachers, conditions of school and teaching materials are all in a weak state. Furthermore, they do not have their own special teaching materials. So, vocational arts colleges with a lower education background and a lower threshold are essentially different from the erhu-teaching in professional institutions. To meet the current situation of the development of higher education and the higher education reform, the erhu teaching reform as the most significant part of improving the quality of teaching and teaching achievements in vocational art colleges is to have a further research on the teaching methods. This paper has a comprehensive description on the erhu teaching in vocational art colleges, using the methods of survey, interview, collecting literatures and comparative study respectively. It discussed the main points in details from three aspects, including the history of the erhu teaching development, the status quo and the reform of teaching methods. Finally, it made some suggestions for the vocational art colleges about how to improve their teaching methods.
