Holmes Rolston III is one of the twentieth century's greatest environmental ethicists. His "Natural Value " theory is a new thinking of the intrinsic value of nature. This paper explains his theory and analyses the historical and cultural revelation in the historical background of the western environmental ethics thought. Based on the theory of ecology,Rolston re-analyzed the relationship between man and nature, and defined the point of view that the ecological system has objective intrinsic value, then put forward the turns of philosophy:Philosophy gone wild. From the perspective of holism, and by describing the facts and the relationship between fact and value, he constructed a complete theoretical system of natural value. This theory provides a systematic construct about environmental ethics, and also provides an objective philosophical basis for environmental protection.
