| Textbooks are primary tools and foundation of teaching, quality of teaching could be directly affected by the standard of a textbook. While vocabulary is an important part of a textbook, the preparation of key words can have a substantial impact on the quality of a textbook and consequently, the quality of teaching. Learners'interpretation and degree of understanding on key terms will have a direct influence on their communication skills. It is therefore essential to focus on the study of vocabulary of a textbook targeting at foreigners.This article will use the textbook <New Silk Road Business Chinese> by editor Li Xiaoqi published by Beijing University Press as a subject of study, combining relevant theory, detailed analysis was conducted on the preparation of vocabulary of the 6 textbooks including starter, intermediate, and master levels, and then come up with the advantages and shortcomings of the textbook and trying to making recommendation on the composition of its vocabulary. This article will include the following parts:1. To discuss the relationship between the vocabulary of commercial Chinese textbooks and <Graded Chinese vocabulary and a syllabus of Chinese characters>; <Syllabus of Commercial Chinese exams>. By comparing the relevant data obtained from these textbooks, detailed analysis is made on <New Silk Road Business Chinese> vocabulary's level of difficulty, coverage and amount of words.2. By noting the key words of the textbook according to the three aspects: phonetic labelling, part of speech labelling,translational labelling, and make a few suggestions on translations.3. By considering the selection of question types and the amount of exercise questions, the textbook's vocabulary exercise is examined, pointing task communicative practice strength and a few personal recommendations are made.4. Through the analysis of various aspects of key words, the strength and weaknesses are obtained, recommendations are made by making reference to the features of other educational materials. This hopefully has inspired the preparation of textbooks. |
