The Study Of Guo Luo Zhuan Yu Ji

Since Xiong Yang in Han Dynasty invented'zhuanyu'in《Fang Yan》,there has been no more research concentrated on this field for more than one thousand years. However, Yaotian Cheng, who is a scholar in Qing Dynasty, introduces'zhuanyu'into the research of etymology. Based on the method, which define the meaning of one word according to its sound, it describes the relationship between definition and sound among more than 250 cognates selected from specific ancient literature and dialect. Through the study,'zhuanyu'is not limited to monosyllabic word any longer; it has climbed up to a new level of cognates, including alliteration and assonance, which brings the development of'zhuanyu'to a brand-new era.As the research on"zhuanyu"in Qing Dynasty is mainly covered by the focuses on《Zhuan Yu Er Shi Zhang Xu》of Zhen Dai and《Guang Ya Shu Zheng》of Niansun Wang, few attention is paid on《Guo Luo Zhuan Yu Ji》. Therefore, the purpose of the thesis is to systematically review the literature and recognize the achievements on Etymology, in the meantime, the deficiency of《Guo Luo Zhuan Yu Ji》is discussed as well. Through the study of the research, it is intended to contribute partially to the understanding of the systemic of words by exploring the relationship between different words in the process of language development.The thesis is consisted of five chapters in all,Chapter One: The significance and theoretical framework of the study are introduced.Chapter Two: The basic information about《Guo Luo Zhuan Yu Ji》, incorporating brief introduction to the author and historical background of the literature, are presented in the part.Chapter Three: The main content and research methodology are illustrated in the chapter.Chapter Four: This chapter interprets findings and analysis. Firstly, more than 250 rhymed cognates are selected according to lexicon theory. Secondly, sufficient database of Ancient Chinese and the list of old Chinese phonology created by MR.Zheng Zhang shangfang, are utilized to provide sound, definition and example for every single word. Thirdly, the 250 words are categorized to discover the law of vocal switch.Chapter Five: It is the final part of the whole study. The achievement and deficiency of study on etymology contributed by《Guo Luo Zhuan Yu Ji》are concluded in the chapter.
