English writing is one of the essential language skills for college students, and tocultivate and develop college students' competence of English writing is of great necessityboth for their present study and future job. The practical English writing is primarilystudied in the thesis, which plays an important role in the cross-cultural communicationand social activities. However, English writing has been a bottleneck in English teaching,especially the popularization of the practical writing course. So how to help studentsimprove their study efficiency of English writing and to provide students new learningtools with a systematic and comprehensive knowledge of practical English writing havebeen an urgent problem in English teaching.Along with the advanced development of Modern Education Technology, and withautonomous learning and individual learning becoming more and more the dominant trendof learning, to integrate English teaching with the network to develop an unique andindividualized learning system has become the hotspot in education innovation. So how tointegrate the practical English writing learning with the network technology becomes themajor point for the thesis. Inspired with the Constructivism and experiential learning,drawing on the cognitive approach and supported with the contemporary computertechnology as JSP technology and SQL server2000, the practical English writing on-linelearning system is developed. The on-line practical writing system supplies a new learningmodel, which is a unity of on-line learning, on-line practicing and on-line evaluating. Themajor advantages of the on-line practical English writing learning system are:1) Autonomous function. Students can arrange the studies depending on their ownneeds. The autonomous learning involves the self-paced learning, controlling the learningfrequency, choosing the favourite or required learning materials, testing the learningresults according to the own learning progress and evaluating learners' achievement in thecourse learning.2) Informative function. There are totally seventy items provided by the system forstudents to have a systematic and comprehensive study of the practical English writing. From the basic knowledge introduction, universal writing skills instruction, therepresentative samples for assisting learning, to the on-line practicing are all theconstituents of the system.3) Search function. According to their learning interest and with the help of theSearch bond, students can choose their own learning objectives and exactly locate whatthey want to study.4) Self-evaluating function. This is the most distinguished feature of the designedsystem. With the help of this on-line writing learning system, especially depending on itsself-evaluating function, the large-scale automated testing concerning to the objectiveinformation and the structural knowledge of the practical English writing items will beimplemented.
