Research On Farmers' Suicide In The Perspective Of Social Change

Suicide is an important issue of public health,and it is also an important social problem. What Suicide in China appears much different from that of western countries.This thesis focuses on the farmers' uicide cases in the period of 1970 to 2009 of three adjacent administrative villages of Anzhen town in the southeast of Hubei Province. In the view of social changes,based on the line of alterations in family structure and changes of family relationship in the process of social transformation,and combined with the rising of female status,this thesis puts suicide back into of the village life and trys to explain the suicide issue in the 40 years period of the three villages and its transformation trends.In addition,it trys to explore the social causes and mechanism of the farmers' suicide upsurge arising in the 1980s' nd 1990s' f the three villages.The farmers' uicide upsurge arising in the 1980s' 990s' s closely connected with the social change headed by the nation,and this connection mainly realizes via the intermediate variable of family.Alterations in family structure,changes of family relationship and the transformation of family ethics concepts attached to families lead to the variations of role awareness and role expectation of different role individuals in families.What accompanies this process is the weakness of female subject consciousness and the rising of female status.So,taken in this sense,mainly resulting from husband and wife's confliction and intergenerational contradictions,the individual suicide appearing as failure to mental adjustment is the outcome of social change. Suicide of groups different in age and sex shows very different behavioral and psychological characteristics.Farmers' suicide incidents occurring inside of families are also public occurrences in villages,and the village nature and village culture of Clan-based villages is the social basis and natural basis of the farmers' uicide in the area.
