A Study On Ornate Poetry Of Western Jin Dynasty

The aim of this study is the ornate poetry of Western Jin Dynasty. Starting with the research of the correlative age and background, this thesis has analyzed the representative poets and poems and anatomized the reasons and character. The results show that the presence of ornate poetry of Western Jin Dynasty is an indispensable section in the history of Chinese ancient poetry , which has important influenced the poetry of the Eastern Jin Dynasty and Gongti poetry in Southern Dynasty.There are four sections in this thesis.The preface firstly analyzed the implication of"ornate", then definded the character of ornate poetry. Ornate words is the surface of this style, poignant emotion is the core of it, which combined with ornate form and deep love. The second, this thesis simply reviewed the status quo of researches about this problem and tidied up the research fruits of this problem in modern times. Finally, the aims and the main contents of this study have been introduced.In chapter one, the complicated reasons of this poetry style have been analyzed. First of all, the special historical circumstance resulted in extravagance, which combined with the aesthetic consciousness, brought a grand aesthetic age. The representations of this on literature are the ornate words. Secondly, the advancing of the status of art and the self-expression of literator has played key roles. The third reason is the influence of"Chuci"and"Jianan"poetry. Poets in Western Jin Dynasty tended to learn the luxuriant rhetoric, which is the artistry of"Chuci".They also inherited the beautiful words from"Jianan"poetry and abandoned the strong essence.In chapter two, the aesthetic character of poetry of Western Dynasty, in essence and form, has discussed. On the aspect of essential, the obvious trait is urbane and implied, which has direct relations with the appearance of poems following primitive poetry, the second prosperity of four characters poetry and a vast number of tropes. Moreover, the sensation of these poems is mild. The ornate poetry mostly described the life and death, departure and love. Some poems depicting the memory of lover are the popular products in that era. On the aspect of form, ornate poetry has generally achieved the harmonious and ornate state through magnificent, rich and colorful words.In chapter three, the influence of the ornate poetry on the poems of Eastern Jin Dynasty and the Gongti poetry in Southern Dynasty has been illustrated. The poetic theory in Eastern Jin Dynasty comes from the theory in Western Jin Dynasty. Except for Xuanyan poems, Poems of Western Jin Dynasty are mostly ornate. The sense of yearn for long life and happiness was more strong and developed in spirits and reality, which created the climax of the poetry about immortals and gave birth to eclogues. Furthermore, in the Six Dynasties, the poets had paid more attention to the appreciation of females'appearance than women's inner world. The addiction of appearance description and the use of rhetoric were extraordinary apparent.
