| Material is a kind of educational resources and a kind of educational tools. As an educational resource, materials should choose the elite of human's cultural knowledge information; Served as an educational tool, material should present advanced notions of education and training. Advanced English (Revised Edition) BookⅠ,Ⅱ(hereafter, AE) is commonly used by English majors at universities, and it is essential to do an overall evaluation to its use effects.The research is based on Cunningsworth's evaluation standard to evaluate AE, which were published by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press with the aid of impressionistic evaluation and in-deep evaluation. By way of evaluation questionnaires, needs analysis questionnaires and teacher interviews, the paper evaluates AE from the aspects of content, language skill, exercise, overall evaluation and other practical factors with the aid of data analysis. The results review that AE satisfyingly meets both linguistic and cognitive needs of English majors in advanced stage in that:1) AE is in accord with the needs of teaching syllabus and the students' needs; 2) it presents authentic and abundant language input, which is various and culture-specific; 3) The books present a reasonable combination of the language skills. In addition, the research also pointed out the shortages and suggestions about the book series, such as in the arrangement of the texts, to add more texts of different themes which could arouse students'interest such as music, PE, etc.; in the binding of coursebooks, the coverage, page and layout can be more attavtive and ample; to provide more auxiliary materials such as the listening materials and volumes of background knowledge and so on.The paper means to arouse the teachers to focus on the material use and evaluation of English majors in advanced stage and master some basic means of materials evaluation. And furthermore, it aims to promote the change of English teaching and learning model of English majors. |
