This paper presents a comparative study of design courses between China and UK. The objectives of this research seeks to suggestions of alternative approaches for curriculum design by analyisng the design courses in Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design in UK and China Central Academy of Fine Arts in China.In the chapter I, this paper first gives a brief overview of the recent history, the status, the purpose, the methods and definition of concepts of this research.Chapter II begins by laying out the development of the modern design education in UK and China. In respect of UK, it presents the background of industrial revolution which is a necessary condition for modern British art and design education coming into being. Furthermore, it also introduces two significant scholars John Ruskin and William Morris who are significant to modern design education. Regarding China, this chapter introduces the main three stages of the formation of modern Chinese design education, and the development of Chinese art academies.The chapter III describes the overview and the content of design course in UK and China. In the UK, the research takes Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design for an example. For China, the chapter presents three colleges: the Nanjing University of the Arts, the Central Academy of Fine Arts and the China Academy of Art.The chapter IV demonstrates the comparative study of the graphic design and product design courses in the Central Saint Martins College of Art and the Central Academy of Fine Arts.In the last chapter, it can be concluded that British universities focus on development of students learning ability, practical ability and the communication and cooperation between lecturers and students and among students. In addition, the research gives three suggestions for design education in China. The curriculum must focus on students learning process, creative thinking skills and the practical ability of students.
