What is drawing and why to draw, are the basic point of this paper. As a foreign word, sketch appeared 100years ago in China. Due to the limitation of history, and the sophistication of its definition, the understanding of sketch has always been a controversial issue in the education of academic fine arts. With new media surging up, the artistic module and the critic are changing with each passing day. The traditional understanding and practice of drawing differ from the modern development. Begins with the historical background of the word Drawing, the article has sorted out the related words and all definitions of Drawing, which is a breakthrough of the old ideaology of taking drawing as the foundation of shaping. Based on the feelings during academic learning, I have outlined the definitions of drawing and expressed my opinions on the significance of drawing as well as its relationship with artistic creation in an open and academic way.
