On Analysis Into The Literary Connotations In Su Tong's "Southern World"

Su Tong repeatedly depicts in great details about the "South" in his literary works. He describes vividly a poetic "South'" in a depressing and dejected ambience. As such, an analysis into his literary works of the "Southern World" will be useful in understanding and comprehend his style of writing and literary intentions. This paper combines internal and external multi-perspectives and methods, such as originology, psychological perspectives, geographical reasons, culture and the principle of comparative literature to explore the theoretical aspects of Su Tong's literary works, especially the "Southern World" in his literary works. This will aid in the understanding of the charm of Su Tong's distinctive "Southern World". This paper will focus the analysis on two of his works - "Feng Yang Tree Village" and "Xiang Chun Tree Street" literary series. The texts will be scrutinized to discover and analyze the literary connotations, intentions and his source of literary creativity. This paper is divided into 3 components: in the first part, focus will be put in understanding the beginning of Su Tong's life, the source of his literary creativity and the linkages to the forming of his distinctive writing style of the "Southern World", re-affirming the importance of the "Southern World" to Su Tong. Next, I will discuss how Su Tong structure and depict the stories of the "South", his style of writing while reminiscing and forward-looking, and the meanings and inferred to in his imaginative style of writing. In the third component, this paper analysis will be made into the characters, images and ambiences described in Su Tong's works, to understand the aesthetic meaning and value in his literary works.
