The Study Of Black White And Gray Composition In Figurative Painting

Composition is the foundation for the creation of an outstanding piece of painting. It determines the texture and its appeal, threading the meaning, theme and the emotion of the piece together. The so-called black white and gray composition is a way to flatten the realistic element, generalize the image details. This paper uses black white and gray composition as an entry point to carry out a specialized study. Based on the analysis of typical paintings and the study of grand masters'successful composition, this paper discusses the effect and significant of black white and gray composition on a painting. In attempt to study and analyze the black white and gray composition of some typical work, this paper would focus on figurative paintings especially, summarizing its effect and significance on an image and its general pattern in painting practice.In order to do so, this paper first presents an overview on the definition of composition as well as black white and gray composition. Next, it examines and summarizes the two major factors that affect black white and gray composition colors and figures. Then, it focuses on the analysis of the visual presentation in black white and gray composition, summarizing its form patterns.Next, this paper will study figurative paintings of different periods. Attempt will be made to analyze the composition, breaking down into elements, understand and study the classic points of black white and gray composition so as to verify the earlier analysis and study about black white and gray composition. Lastly, to better understand black white and gray composition, I will also explore it in real practice which is through my own thesis painting as well as everyday painting practices.
