It's around 30 years since Chinese TV dramas in local dialects made their debut in the 1980s, in the period of which their quantities and qualities have witnessed comprehensive improvement. Some of the excellent works follow closely the pace of the new era, explore into the details of social life and exert far-reaching influences. The success of TV dramas in local dialect renders them worthwhile of studying. The studies are to be unfolded in three respects:the external, preliminary functions of these TV dramas, their profound cultural implications and the aesthetic styles of their texts. Local dialects play an indubitable part in the making of these dramas in that they aid the performances of the actors, perfect the shaping of fictional characters, diversify the use of languages and selection of themes by the creators, thus enriching the contents of artistic creation. Moreover, the estrangement, novelty and delight brought by local dialects reward the audience with refreshing aesthetic experiences. The profound cultural implications of these TV dramas, in comparison with their external, preliminary functions, are worthy of more attentions. TV dramas in local dialects are accompanied by the decline of elitist cultures, and meanwhile the rise of more popular ones. The daily language of the ordinary people are adopted and represented widely in the TV dramas, suggesting that their cultural awareness has grown into a cultural pattern not to be neglected. And the recurrence of local dialects in these TV dramas is bound to pose a challenge to the discourse authority that mandarin stands for. The use of local dialects in TV dramas is conducive to the inheritance of regional culture, and leads the creators to the identities in the process of artistic creation. These TV dramas also boast extraordinarily vivid aesthetic styles, as revealed in their candid observance of social realities, the distinct feature of comic and documentary styles, and the unique personal signatures of the actors and directors. Although Chinese contemporary TV dramas in local dialects has made the good progress, but is still facing the difficult position, the wish obtains develops well, besides own, needs all quarters to pay attention together diligently.
