Aristotle was proposed in chapter VII of The Nicomachean Ethics:"The undesirable of moral character are three in number, viz. vice, incontinence, brutality. In the case of two of these it is plain what the opposite is:virtue is the name we give to the opposite of vice, and continence to the opposite of incontinence." People should pursue continence and virtue and avoid incontinence, vice and brutality.According to Aristotle's views, continence and incontinence is this kind of intermediate virtue between virtue and vice. When continence and virtues come closer, continence is further away from vice; incontinence get closer to vice, incontinence is further away from virtues. In Aristotle's opinion, continence is a decent and good quality——opposite to incontinence,a wicked and evil quality. Intermediate virtue in continence and incontinence also exists between virtues and vice. Continence is a bridge to virtue, while incontinence leads to vice.Continence has the feature of selective purposiveness, on the country, incontinence has the desire of blindness. The incontinence and the continence both have desire, however, in front of it, continent man can abandon the desire and make the right selection by reason while incontinent man will go after the desire, follow blindly, lost himself and be drived to destruction. The primary purpose of continence is to get happiness. Continence itself is to control the pleasure of touch and taste, so, the primary goal of continence is to get pleasure. The main purpose of continence is to reach virtue, a noble quality for human being.Developing virtue should start from individuals. In any moral practices which can be realized by low virtue should not be realized by high virtue. The ultimate aim of continence is the realization of happiness. Everyone is pursuing happiness and the activity of happiness is the noblest and the most exalted state. Happiness is a necessity for the man alive while people never talk the death is pleasure. Aristotle thought happiness is the activity conformed to virtue, containing pleasure, reverie and meditation.Enkrateia, the antonym of akrasia, mainly means actor's capability and willpower to follow their best judgement when he faces some opposite temptation. To study the continence theory is to cultivate this willpower, so, that people can transform the right moral knowing into the right action. Continence is a necessary requisite to all successful moral education.
