| The conception of openness in Eco's works theory in of great importance in western text theory. The open work criticized not only the conception of traditional text theory, attach the author to work, but also give the reflection to the criticism of formalism and poststructuralism , text/reader-response criticism, lay criticism on the reader. He noted that in order to give an objective and efficient explanation of literary work, the interpretation process must rely on dynamic balance among author, text and reader. The paper discussed Eco's the open work in four aspects. Firstly, from the dimension of theory history, discussed the particular consciousness in the process of 20th century work theory. Secondly, this paper focused on theoretical connotation of work openness theory, intellectual context of theory in the open work, the precondition and specific mechanism for an open work. Thirdly, discussed the possibility and limitation of an open work, through the study of overinterpretation conception. Eco proposed model writer and model reader to explain how to give an model explaination of a text. Model reader should follow the symbol left by model writer, explain the work in the way which it should be explained, search for the text cooperator—model writer, then abandon overinterpretation. Lastly, discussed the philosophical and cultural significance of open work theory by analyzing the theory process of Eco, from middle ages aesthetic to post-modern thought. With the macro prospection and the understanding of pastime attitude and role play, irony strategy, this paper located Eco's literary thought into mild and constructive post-modernism. |
