Vocabulary, as the most active element in a language, has such a strong adaptability that it can accommodate itself to the development and changes of the society by adjusting itself and creating new words continuously. Therefore, many changes in the society can be reflected in the vocabulary. The new words have greatly enriched the modern language lexical system. Based on the analysis of abundant Korean and Chinese new words, which emerged during the recent twenty years, in such fields as meaning, features, the reasons of their appearance as well as the present study on them, this thesis attempts to analyze the generative types of the contemporary new words in Chinese and Korean so as to reveal the characteristics of word formation of Chinese and Korean as well as the discrepancies between these two languages in this regard. This thesis consists of five parts: Chapter one, as an introduction, mainly presents these information, including the purpose, scope and research method of this thesis as well as the research achievement and situation of these new words in Chinese and Korean.Chapter two elaborates the definition of the concept of new words and distinguishes the concept of new words with other similar notions. Besides, it specifies the time limits of the new words and investigates the new words in such fields as the causes that lead to their emergence, characteristics and classification.Chapter three, from the perspective of linguistics, classifies the generative methods in detail, thus concluding the features of both Chinese and Korean. The main three generative methods of new words that Chinese and Korean share include neology (new meaning, new combination), borrowing foreign words and abbreviations. In addition, there are other ways, such as borrowing the words from the internet, popularization of the technical terms, but the use of dialect is a unique generative method of new words in Chinese.Chapter four, after a comparison of the generative method of new words in these two languages, summarizes the similarities and discrepancies between the new words in Chinese and Korean in terms of form and meaning.Chapter five is a conclusion.
