| Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has thousands of years'history and embodies rich culture of China. English translation of TCM terminologies assumes an indispensable part in enhancing internalization of TCM. This thesis analyzes cultural influences on the English translation of TCM terminologies, and explores general principle and strategies of English translation on TCM terminologies, and analyses English translation of TCM terminologies from cultural perspectives, with the aim of improving quality of English translation and promoting development of English translation of TCM.This thesis consists of four parts. The first part is about the previous studies about culture and translation, TCM culture and TCM translation, and introduces brief history and development of English translation of TCM and English translation of TCM terminologies, and discusses cultural influences on the English translation of TCM terminologies. The second part discusses general principle and proposes four approaches, namely literal translation, free translation, transliteration, combination of literal translation and free translation. The third part is research method. The fourth part analyses WHO International Standard Terminology on Traditional Medicine in the Western Pacific Region from cultural perspective, which is divided into three sections:1) international standard of English translation of TCM terminologies in Basic Theory and cultural heritage; 2) international standard of English translation of TCM terminologies in Diagnosis and cultural heritage; 3) international standard of English translation of TCM terminologies in Formulas and Medicinal and cultural heritage.A successful translator should have strong cultural consciousness. Translators should not only be proficient at Chinese medical concepts but also take full consideration of the culture implication which reflects the philosophical thinking of Traditional Chinese Medicine contained in the terminologies. |
