Art System In China's Development And Thinking

Art institution is an institution that art and art activities should be redefined in a "social-cultural-political" context and a particular historical atmosphere. Biennial is an art institution, while Shanghai Biennale is the oldest one of all extant Biennials in China. Through the analysis of Shanghai Biennial, we can also see the successful experiences and difficulties in China's art institution development.Through literature review, comparative study, depth interviews and other research methods, the author has commented on the institution theory of art and reviewed the history of the construction of art institution-Shanghai Biennial. The paper aimed to enrich the institution theory of art in our country and also contribute to the better development of the Biennials in China.During the study of Shanghai Biennial, the author choose two closely related areas:arts communication and arts patron, as main perspectives. The study found that, Shanghai Biennial has made certain achievements on the construction of art institution. However, under the press of the so-called mainstream ideology and shortage of money, there is multi-wrestling in the process of art institution building. Thus, the author also give some suggestions to room for improvement.
