My dissertation aims at defending both Alasdair MacIntyre's criticism of Marxist historical determinism and his Aristotelian interpretation of Marxism.First, in analyzing the reason why the scientific prediction of coming of Communism is fallacious. MacIntyre parallels Marx's confidence in human progress with not only the optimistic spirit particularly espoused by the 18 century but a secularized version of Christian faith in the eternal purpose as well. While strongly objects to treating Marxism as a rigid scientific truth resisting further amendment and critique. MacIntyre proposes positively that we retain the invigorating Christian spirits inherited by Marxism.Additionally, a suggestion of portraying Marxism in the light of Aristotelian moral philosophy is demonstrated. Though controversial at the first glance. MacIntyre's project of a morality-friendly version of Marxism discloses an important perspective unfairly ignored by traditional Marxists, thereby providing us with valuable edifications. In this part I tried to elucidate the reasons why disregarding Marx's idea of the ideal human nature and downplaying the humanistic standpoint of Marxism are either detrimental or mistaken. In the third part. MacIntyre's alternative picture of viewing human nature as vulnerable and dependent creatures is observed. He argues that every individual should attempt to set up the kind of participatory local community as the practical way to resist the erosive power of modern capitalist world. In conclusion. I contend that MacIntyre's Aristotelian interpretation of Marxism has considerable merits, thus worth researching.
