Abstract/Summary:
Xu Yuanzhong is one of the most famous translators in today's China, who has dedicated most of his career to introducing classical Chinese poems to western countries, so as to promote cultural communication between the Oriental and the Occidental worlds. With Andre Lefevere's rewriting theory, this thesis takes qualitative research approach to probe into Xu Yuanzhong's translation of classical Chinese poems. The methodology guiding Xu's translation is"creation", which is similar to Lefevere's proposition of rewriting. Furthermore, the framework of rewriting theory would be used to examine the dominant ideology and poetics in China of Xu Yuanzhong's time so as to find out how those factors exert influence on his translation. This thesis seeks to take a more objective and macroscopic view towards Xu Yuanzhong's theory and practice, and provides a new perspective for later research on this translator, so as to attract more attention to native Chinese translator and their work in promoting traditional Chinese culture.
