Some core concepts of Narratology, applied befittingly, would be helpful in unscrambling the novelty of Xiao Hong. The thesis viewpoints are elaborated as the following:Charpter One illustrates the narrator's position, voice and authority in Xiao Hong's works. Xiao Hong is an expert in in-story narrator, whose voice usually stands out due to the deep devotion of the narrator's feeling. An in-story narrator, weakening its narrative authority to some extent, could be an alternative narrator authority characterized by sense of reality and closeness because of her short range of observation and evaluation on event and figure.Charpter Two deals with the narrative focalization in Xiao Hong's works. In this part, the thesis firstly clarificates the definition of focalization and its modes, then analyses zero focalization and fixed inner focus frequently used by Xiao. Finally, the thesis concludes a double focus based on children and adult vision is an inclination in the aspect of theme and material selection in Xiao's works.Charpter Three expounds the narrative time and figure description in Xiao Hong's works. Xiao's novel exploits omitter, summary and scene of narrative speed and pace to the point, meanwhile, handles narrative frequency originally and naturally. In figure description of Xiao's novel, combinding usualness with disposable action benefits the portraying of plump and three-dimensional characters. |
