The Application And Research Of The Theory Of Metadiscourse

This thesis mainly uses the theory of meatdiscourse combining with Rhetorical Structure Theory and some relevant views of Cognitive Linguistics to explore a case that proverbs in discourses can be a kind of metadiscourse.In this thesis ,the writer makes classification about proverbs which as metadiscourse from several different angles.Then the writer receives a new view that the theory of metadiscourse can be a new angle for the research of Rhetoric.This thesis mainly selects examples from modern Chinese written discourses,and less involes in oral discourses and ancient Chinese written discourses.This thesis includes six chapters with more than 30,000 characters in total.In chapter one,the main introduction consists in the character,the features,and the classification of Chinese proverbs,and the research object is the proverbs in discourses.Chapter two briefly introduces the theory of meatdiscourse and some relevant theories of Linguistics.Chapter there is the most major chapter in this thesis,which analysises and discusses the main view that proverbs sentences are always as metadiscourse in discourses and the relationship between proverbs sentences and context is actually the relationship between metadiscourse and primary discourse.Looking proverbs as metadiscourse is helpful to understand the structure of discourses and the relationship between the speakers or writers and the listeners or readers.Chapter four defines and classifies proverbs which as metadiscourse. First, it defines some kinds of proverbs which are not metadiscourse.And then, it discusses and shows a lot of examples from different angles,such as if proverbs have citation marks,the position which proverbs are and the different styles about discourses proverbs in.Chapter five discusses the reletionship between the theory of metadiscourse and Rhetoric.The conclusion is that the theory of metadiscourse will be a new viewpoint for Rhetorical research and it will make some help for the development of the research of Rhetoric.Chapter six,which is the conclusion,concludes the content and the view of this thesis,and proposes some further topic to be discussed and looks into the future of the research of metadiscourse.
