From 1950s to 1970s, Cao Juren created many valuable masterpieces in Hong Kong, many of which were articles of reminiscence of modern literature. However, because of many factors, it took a long time before his research emerged. And his articles have attracted academic attention and stimulated research into them these years. On such a basis that previous mainland researchers payed much more attention on the reminiscence of modern literature's value as historical materials and relatively less attention on its writing personality on style and substance, using literary history writings of mainland and Taiwan at that time as potential references, this article focuses on Cao's realistic attitude, unique viewpoint and creative comment that were showed when he observed modern literature, to highlight his courage and insight as a historian, and his liberalistic spiritual conduct as a the May 4th scholar. Meanwhile, the article points out that walking on the edge between history and literature is the biggest embarrassment Cao's reminiscence encountered when receiving criticism and orientation, but its unique intellectual merit lives in it too. To sum up, the limited research in this article aims to further dig the unique interest and infinite value of Cao's creations of reminiscence of modern literature.
