The effects of Shengmai extract (SMT) on Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) xin qi deficiency and blood stasis type and the involved mechanisms were studied in the present paper.The results indicated that SMT could significantly prolong the duration of electrocardiograph (ECG) in tracheaclosed mice, improved the myocardial ischemia rate, T wave height variation and ST segment drift in acute myocardial ischemia rats. It was also observed that SMT obviously improved both the sum of ST segment drift (ΣST) and number of ST segment drift beyond 2 mV (N-ST) in acute myocardial ischemia dogs. Furthermore, SMT protected the cardiac muscle against ischemia and anoxia significantly.SMT significantly decreased heart rate (HR),mean arterial pressure (MAP),left ventricular systolic pressure (LVEDP)and maximal rate of decline of ventricular pressure (-dp/dtmax), increased left ventricular systolic pressure (LVSP) and maximal rate of rise of ventricular pressure (+dp/dtmax). After treatment with SMT in heart failure dogs and in acute myocardial ischemia dogs, MAP, LVSP and±dp/dtmax were increased, and LVEDP were decreased. It indicated that SMT could improve myocardial systolic function and diastolic function, the two-ways regulation effect of SMT on MAP was also found.CHD xin qi deficiency and blood stasis type animal model was established by means of combined factors of giving basic amount of food, compelling to swim with a burden of 5% of their weights until they exhausted, and feeding high lipid emulsion and a great quantity of propanolol, and afterwards the model is completed by infusing Pituitrin intraperitoneally. In order to prove the effect of SMT on the model, we treat the animal by SMT for 5 days. It was shown that SMT could significantly improve the animal model status, physical ability, toleration, ECG, the damage of free radicals and the abnormality of hemorheology of CHD xin qi deficiency and blood stasis type model animal.In conclusion, SMT could be applicable to the treatment of CHD xin qi deficiency and blood stasis type. Its mechanism may be related with its effect of distending of coronary artery, improving of myocardial systolic function and diastolic function, decreasing of myocardial oxygen consumption inhibiting of calcium overload and reducing of free radicals production.
