Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the results of open reduction and internal fixation of acute displaced fractures of the scaphoid using the K-wires or Bold screw in terms of union condition, complications and functional results. Methods: Ten consecutive patients with acute displaced fractures of the scaphoid were treated with open reduction and internal fixation using the K-wires or Bold screw between September 2009 and October 2011 in our hospital. All the patients were evaluated an average of 6 months(range,3-10 months). The rate of union, the time to union, complications were recorded. Wrist mobility(flexion, extension, radial deviation and ulnar deviation) was measured comparing with the healthy side. Results: All the ten fractures(100%) united. The average time to union was10.1 weeks(range,8-14 weeks). The mean range of motions was 65.7°flexion(92% of the contralateral),76.6°extension(90% of the contralateral),29.8°ulnar deviation(94% of the contralateral),12.5°radial deviation(82% of the contralateral)。Conclusion: Open reduction and internal fixation of acute displaced fractures of the scaphoid using the K-wires or Bold screw can obtain high union rate, short time to union, well wrist function recovery, minimal complications.
