The Study Of Right Lateral Position Under Real-time Monitor To Apply Capsule Endoscopy

Objective:To investigate whether the right lateral position under real-time monitor shortens the gastric transit time of capsule endoscopy and increases the complete examination rate of the small bowel.Methods:From January 2009 to December 2010,80 patients were randomized into the right lateral position group (n=40) and control group (n=40).All patients were viewed through real-time monitor system at OMOM work station after swallowing the capsule by an endoscopist.The patients in the right lateral position group were instructed to lie on their right side until the endoscopist confirmed that the capsule had passed through the pylorus.The patients in the control group were allowed to keep upright position.Gastric transit time and small-bowel transit time were recorded for each patient. The complete examination rate of the small bowel and the positive detection rate were calculated for each group.Results:There were no significant differences in the sex,mean age and indications between the two groups. Gastric transit time was significantly shorter in the right lateral position group than in the control group (P<0.05).There was no significant difference between the small-bowel transit time of the two groups (P>0.05). The complete examination rate of the small bowel in the right lateral position group was significantly higher than that in the control group(P<0.05). There was no significant difference between the positive detection rate of the two groups (P>0.05)Conclusion:Observing by real-time monitor system and keeping patients in the right lateral position before the capsule endoscopy enters the pylorus is a simple,safe and effective method to shorten the gastric transit time and increase the complete examination rate of the small bowel.
