Objective:To estimate the prevalence of glycometabolic abnormality among adults aged 40~79 years in Chengdu area in 2008.To explore the relationship between body mass index, waist circumference and blood glucose among residents in Chengdu area. Methods:Using the stratified cluster sampling method, a questionnaire was conducted in a middle-aged and elder population aged 40~79 years old in the urban and rural areas of Chengdu in Apr-Nov 2008, to measure blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, blood glucose after oral administration of 75-g glucose, blood lipid, blood uric acid, height, body weight, waistline, etc.; 5,205 valid copies of questionnaires were obtained in total. Results:Prevalence of diabetes mellitus, impaired fasting glucose(IFG), impaired glucose tolerance(IGT)and impaired glucose regulation(IGR)were 18.0%,2.5%, 20.1% and 22.6%, respectively. The prevalence of glycometabolic abnormality have no differences between sexes. The prevalence of diabetes and IGT increased with aging, but the prevalence of IFG have no obvious associated with age.The level of FPG,PPG and diabetes mellitus prevalence rate were significantly higher in people with abdomen obesity than people with normal waist circumference. BMI, waist circumference in diabetic residents were significantly higher than non—diabetic residents. Conclusion:Our results showed that the glyeometabolic abnormality are highly prevalent in Chengdu residents;over half of them are undiagnosed diabetes. The prevalence of impaired glucose regulation(IGR) and diabetes increased with aging. Blood glucose level and diabetes prevalence rate were closely related with waist circumference among residents in Chengdu area.
