Objective:To compare the clinical therapeutic effect of conventional medical treatment combined with rheum officinale and magnesium sulphate in the treatment of patients with severe acute pancreatitis(SAP). Methods:one hundred and eighty seven SAP patients were randomly divided into group of magnesium sulphate (n-82) and group of rheum officinale (n-105). Based on comprehensive treatment of the acute physiology and chronic health evaluationⅡ(APACHEⅡ)score and Balthazar CT score before treatment and 3,7 days after treatment were observed and compared. Besides, Simultaneously recorded for the first time of the bowel movement, levels of serum and urine amylase, C-reactive protein (CRP)levels, white blood cell levels, the remission time of abdominal distension and the average day of stay hospital. Results:the remission time of abdominal distension(5.9±1.8vs7.8±0.5) and C-reactive protein (CRP)(83.2±76.1vs115.5±84.3) in group rheum officinale were significantly lower than group magnesium sulphate(P<0.05). Before and after treatment, the APACHE IT and Balthazar CT scores, the average day of stay hospital, levels of serum and urine amylase, white blood cell, first time of the bowel movement in group rheum officinale and group magnesium sulphate were not significant different(P>0.05). But score points of a rheum officinale groups were lower than magnesium sulphate groups corresponding pancreatitis. Conclusion:First, both rheum officinale and magnesium sulphate are useful in the treatment of patients with severe acute pancreatitis(SAP).Second, rheum officinale is more effectively on SAP than magnesium sulphate treatment.
