Objective:To observe the protective effect of taurine on alcoholic brain damage in ratsMethods:A rat model of alcoholic brain damage was established by intragastric infusion of alcohol. 40 Male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 2 groups, including model group, group. The model group was given dehydrated alcohol (analytic pure, 500 ml/L), once a day for 8 weeks. In the taurine groups were also given dehydrated alcohol (analytic pure, 500 ml/L) and taurine once a day for 8 weeks. After these treatments, all the rats were killed, and the content of endothelin (ET), oxidative stress and tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α) were detected respectively. Brain were taken out and then fixed with 10% paraformaldehyde. The hepatic tissue was embedded with paraffin, sectioned and stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin (HE), the histopathology was observed with microscope.Results:⑴The brain cortex and the hippocampus nerve cells of taurine group were clear. There was no softening focus and less obviously blood vessel dilatation and lymphocyte infiltration compared to the model group.⑵The activity of superoxide dismutase(SOD) and glutathione peroxidase(GSH-PX) in the taurine group were higher, and The serum malonyldiadehyde in the taurine group was lower compared to the model group, these differences in the aspects had statistics significance (P﹤0.05 or P﹤0.01).⑶There was a significant decreased of ET and TNF-αin the taurine group compared to the model group, the differences had statistics significance (P<0.01).Conclusion:Taurine can protect brain from alcoholic damage in rats to some extent, but it needs more evidence to be confirmed.
