Study In The Therapeutic Effect Of Percutaneous Ultrasonography-guided Iodine 125 Seeds Implantation In The Treatment Of Pancreatic Carcinoma.

Objective: To investigate the therapeutic effect of percutaneous ultrasonography-guided iodine 125 seeds implantation in the treatment of unresectable pancreatic carcinoma.Methods: Retrospective analysis of Sixty-three patients of unresectable pancreatic carcinoma,who treated with ultrasonography-guided iodine 125 seeds implantation in China-Japan Union Hospital of Jilin University between 2005.1 and 2010.1,42 males and 21 females, mean age is 63.5±12-year-old. Site of tumor growth : 40 in head of the pancreas , 14 in body of the pancreas, and 9 in tail ofthe pancreas. All patients were confirmed as pancreatic carcinoma by clinical, ultrasound, CT, biopsy or surgical pathology. Patients were randomly divided into two groups : (125)~I group and Gemcitabine group. Curative effect , Clinical symptoms and the quality of life were compared.Results: The median follow-up time of (125)~I group was 7.2 months ( 1 ~ 17 months ) and its tumor therapeutic efficiency was 31.2%. However the median follow-up time of Gemcitabine group was 6.9 months ( 2 ~ 16 months ) and its tumor therapeutic efficiency was 6.45%.By comparing of two groups, there were statistically significant differences in therapeutic efficiency, P = 0.008. 75% patients of (125)~I group had a remission of the painfulness which occurred in the mean 3-5 days since surgery, its mean duration was 23 weeks. But 28.5% patients of Gemcitabine group had a remission of the painfulness which occurred in the mean 27 days since surgery, its mean duration was 11 weeks. By comparing of two groups, there were statistically significant differences in remission of the painfulness, P = 0.042. The group treated by (125)~I implantation which can improve the quality of life had a perfect remission o f the ache,loss of appetite and fatigue.Conclusion: 1,In pancreatic cancer patients, treatment efficiency of iodine 125 seeds implantation is better than Gemcitabine chemotherapy in therapeutic efficiency.2,(125)~I radioactive seed implantation for advanced pancreatic cancer is a simple, safe and effective method, because it has better pain-relief-efficacy in onset time and duration,compared with gemcitabine.3,(125)~I radioactive seed implantation can clearly improve the patient's quality of life in physical, psychological and social function.
