Objective:To investigate the clinical significance and changes of Matrix Metalloproteunase-9, calcium, magnesium and iron in cerebrospinal fluid in children with viral encephalitis. To investigate whether there are correlation among Matrix Metalloproteunase-9, calcium , magnesium and iron in cerebrospinal fluid in children with viral encephalitis. Methods:The levels of matrix metalloproteunase-9(MMP-9) in serum and cerebrospinal fluid were determinede by Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay ( ELISA)in 30 cases of children with viral encephalitis and 10 cases of children without viral encephalitis; The levels of calcium in serum and the levels of calcium, magnesium and iron in cerebrospinal fluid were determinede by Roche Modular P800 chemisty Analyzer in 30 cases of children with viral encephalitis and 10 cases of children without viral encephalitis. Results: 1. The levels of MMP-9 in serum and cerebrospinal fluid in children with severe viral encephalitis and mild viral encephalitis were higher than those of control group (P <0.05),the levels of MMP-9 in serum and cerebrospinal fluid in children with severe viral encephalitis were higher than those in children with mild viral encephalitis (P<0.05);The levels of calcium in cerebrospinal fluid in children with severe viral encephalitis and mild viral encephalitis were lower than those of control group ( P <0.05), The levels of calcium in cerebrospinal fluid in children with severe viral encephalitis were lower than those in children with mild viral encephalitis( P <0.05);The difference of calcium in serum in children with severe viral encephalitis and mild viral encephalitis and those of control group was of statistical significance( P >0. 05);The levels of calcium and magnesium in cerebrospinal fluid in children with viral encephalitis were lower than those of control group ( P <0.05);The levels of iron in cerebrospinal fluid in children with viral encephalitis were higher than those of control group ( P <0.05)..2. MMP-9 levels of cerebrospinal fluid in viral encephalitis group had positive correlation with serum MMP-9 levels(r=0.836, P﹤0.01),calcium levels had negative correlation with MMP-9 levels in cerebrospinal fluid in viral encephalitis group(r=-0.496, P﹤0.05);calcium levels had positive correlation with magnesium levels in cerebrospinal fluid in viral encephalitis group(r=0.428,p<0.05);calcium levels had negative correlation with iron levels in cerebrospinal fluid in viral encephalitis group(r=-0.532,p<0.01);magnesium levels had no correlation with iron levels in cerebrospinal fluid in viral encephalitis group (r=-0.294,p>0.05).Conclusion: MMP-9 and iron levels in cerebrospinal fluid increase in children with viral encephalitis , calcium and magnesium levels in cerebrospinal fluid drop in children with viral encephalitis,MMP-9,calcium,magnesium and iron may contribute to pathophysiology course in viral encephalitis. MMP-9 and iron levels increasing and magnesium levels dropping in cerebrospinal fluid increase in children with viral encephalitis may lead to luxus calcium in nerve cell, MMP-9 and iron levels increasing in cerebrospinal fluid increase in children with viral encephalitis may damage nerve cell directly. The levels of MMP-9 and calcium.in cerebrospinal fluid relates to degree of severity.
