Objective:With the development of the society and medicine science, the quality of human life has been gradually improved as well as the medical knowledge. At the same time, medicine model has also undergone a subtle change, which transformed from single biomedical into biological-psychological-social mode. The importance of psychological factors in disease prevention and treatment has been gradually realized and there is no exception in the field of oral science. The aim of this study were (1) to evaluate the availability of the modified Spielberger's State-Trait Anxiety Inventory to orthodontic patients with fixed appliances; (2) to determine and compare the anxiety levels of patients who undergo orthodontic treatment with varying gender, culture, education background, orthodontic treatment experience, tooth extraction and so on. According to the results of this study, we can offer some additional targeted psychological treatment for the patients with high levels of anxiety to reduce their mental burdens and improve the service quality of oral health. Methods:Spielberger's State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and the modified Spielberger's State-Trait Anxiety Inventory were applied to 20 orthodontic treatment patients. Compare the statistical difference between the two questionnaires. Use the modified questionnaire to identify differences of 87 patients'anxiety level who had been undergoing or will accept orthodontic treatment. Results:There is no difference between Spielberger's State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and the modified questionnaire (P>0.05). Both the treatment time and family education background have impacted on the patient's state anxiety (P<0.05). Pain tolerance, and adverse experiences of dental visits affect both state and trait anxiety (P<0.05).Conclusion:Anxiety levels of patients with fixed orthdontic appliances can measured by the modified questionnaire. The modified questionnaire is not only easy to understand, concise, more suitable for young people but also can be easily accepted and mastered by the respondents. Oral medical staff should provide psychological counseling for patients with high level anxiety before orthodontic treatment, which will benefit physical and mental health of patients and help to decrease anxiety levels in treatment process.
