Objective The necessary of the removal of the vagina vasorum in D2 surgery. The expression of vascular endothelial growth factor‐C (VEGF‐C) in the vagina vasorum and the role of VEGF‐C expression in vagina vasorum metastasis of gastric cancer. Methods A retrospective analysis of 56 patients took D2 surgery from 2008 to 2009 in our hospital, divided into vagina vasorum‐adenectomy group (32 cases) and lymphadenectomy group (24 cases). Some elements about the surgery will be compared in the two groups. We selected a total of 63 cases of gastric carcinoma, obtained specific tissue from them, and investigated it. We concluded that there were only 11 of 63 cases had the vagina vasorum metastasis, and compared the percents of vagina vasorum metastasis with the clinicopathological parameters. We counted the MVD/LVD of the vagina vasorum between metastasis and non‐metastasis by special staining. We also detected the VEGF‐C expression in these tissues by Western Blotting. Results In the retrospective, there was no significant correlation between the vagina vasorum metastasis and the age, sex, tumor size, tumor site, Borrmann types and histological types, only the correlation between the TNM staging and the vagina vasorum metastasis was statistically significant. The quantities of lymph microvessels in metastasis vagina vasorum were more than non‐metastasis ones, and the growth was accepted as statistically significant. We also found out VEGF‐C was expressed in gastric cancer tissues, metastasis lymph node tissues, metastasis vagina vasorum tissues. Conclusion We supposed that vagina vasorum metastasis is existence in gastric cancers, and remove it in operation is necessary and effective. Vagina vasorum metastasis maybe a particular kind of lymph node metastasis, and it will be a single prognostic factor probably.
