Objective: The aim of this study was confirming the correlation between toothpastes and contact cheilitis, and clearing the etiological role toothpaste in contact cheilitis. Methods: Both chronic cheilitis group and control group cases underwent patch tests with 19 kinds of toothpastes, a specially-targeted series mainly against toothpaste and the standard series of allergens adopted by Chemotechnique Diagnostics Company. The correlation between toothpaste as well as their components and subacute/chronic cheilitis were analyzed in statistically. The sensitivity to the routine allergens in cheilitis group was detected. The patients were advised to refrain from use of the sensitive toothpastes and the conditions of cheilitis were observed with a four-week follow up.Results: Nineteen kinds of toothpastes produced 362 positive reactions in 40 cases of cheilitis group, compared with 75 in 20 cases of control group. The rate of positive patch test reaction to toothpastes in cheilitis group (45.4%) was significantly higher than that in control group (19.3%) (P was 0.004). The specially-targeted series produced 19 positive reactions in 10 cases of cheilitis group, compared with 2 in 10 cases of control group. The rate of positive patch test reaction in cheilitis group (9.5%) was significantly higher than that in control group (1.0%) (P was 0.000). The standard series of allergens produced 21 positive cases in cheilitis group, compared with 2 positive cases in control group. The rate of positive patch test reaction in cheilitis group (4.8%) was significantly higher than that in control group (0.8%) (P was 0.000). Conclusion There is a statisticl correlation between toothpaste as well as their components and subacute/chronic cheilitis. The conditions of certain patients improved after refrain from use of the sensitive toothpastes. It suggested that contact factors, especially toothpaste, play an important role in etiology of subacute/chronic cheilitis. The sensitivity to the routine allergens in cheilitis group was higher than control group. It indicated that the patients had atopic constitution.
