ObjectiveTo investigate the present situation and factors of AIDS related knowledge among rural out-of-school adolescents in Henan Province, to evaluate the effect of different intervention ways.Methods430 out-of-school adolescents aged 13-18 and 198 in-school adolescents from Ruyang and Yiyang in Henan Province were selected by convenience sampling. The status of preventing AIDS and influencing factors were assessed following the structured questionnaires Health education interventions were put into practice on the adolescents with the village as a unit. One health education intervention was used every two villages. Lecture, participatory learning, distributing promotional material, play audio and video products, peer education and advocacy network were used respectively in 12 villages. The comprehensive intervention and blank control were used in other 8 villages.198 in-school adolescents aged 13-18 were interfered by lecture in the same period.628 adolescents were assessed with knowledge, attitude of AIDS after the interventions anonymously.Results1 The status of preventing AIDS health education:The average awareness rate of AIDS related knowledge among out-of-school adolescents and in-school adolescents were 47.09%and 56.34%respectively. About 32.60%of out-of-school adolescents felt fear of AIDS. About 46.0%of out-of-school adolescents were willing to shake hands with AIDS patients. The top three sources of acquiring AIDS knowledge were:television and radio, magazines and newspapers, billboards. Lecture was one of favorite health education modes of AIDS. They hoped to know how to prevent AIDS firstly.2 The factors of influencing the Level of AIDS related knowledge in rural out-of-school adolescents:Logistic regression analysis indicated that age and hobbies might be influencing factors for score of AIDS knowledge among rural out-of-school adolescents (P< 0.05).3 Overall effects of different health education interventions about AIDS: The average awareness rate of AIDS-related knowledge was 85.22%out-of-school adolescents after interventions and 47.09%before interventions (P< 0.05). The accurate rate of AIDS related attitude could be improved significantly after intervention.4 The effect of different intervention ways on AIDS related knowledge:The average awareness rate of AIDS related knowledge was 87.64%in lecture group after intervention and 52.08%before intervention (P< 0.05). The average awareness rate of AIDS related knowledge was 87.31%in participatory learning group after intervention and 52.39%before intervention (P< 0.05). The average awareness rate of AIDS related knowledge was 85.46%in distributing promotional material group after intervention and 50.44%before intervention (P< 0.05).The average awareness rate of AIDS related knowledge was 78.40%in play audio after intervention and video products group and 49.08%before intervention (P< 0.05). The average awareness rate of AIDS related knowledge was 85.58%in peer education group after intervention and 43.23%before intervention (P< 0.05).The average awareness rate of AIDS related knowledge was 84.91%in advocacy network group after intervention and 56.05%before intervention (P< 0.05). The average awareness rate of AIDS related knowledge was 85.66%in comprehensive intervention group after intervention and 39.92%before intervention (P< 0.05). The average awareness rate of AIDS related knowledge was 47.98%in blank control group after intervention and 45.52%before intervention (p>0.05).The scores of AIDS related knowledge were higher after intervention than before intervention (P<0.05). There were significant differences among the different methods of intervention (F=2.140,P< 0.05).The first three methods that could increase the scores of AIDS related knowledge were comprehensive intervention, peer education and lecture intervention respectively.5 The effect of different intervention ways on AIDS related attitude:The improved rate of AIDS related attitude in lecture group, participatory learning group, distributing promotional material group, play audio and video products group, peer education group, advocacy network group and comprehensive intervention group were 10.0%-67.5%,2.3%-71.5%,12.8%-74.4%,8.4%-77.8%,0.0%-42.8%,0.1%-71.7%,4.3%-75.5%respectively. The improved rate of AIDS related attitude in blank control group was no obvious changes before and after the intervention.Conclusions1 The average awareness rate of AIDS-related knowledge among out-of-school adolescents was lower than in-school adolescents. The sources of AIDS related knowledge were from the mass media. Lecture was one of favorite health education modes of AIDS. They hoped to know how to prevent AIDS firstly.2 Age and hobbies might be influencing factors for knowledge of AIDS among rural out-of-school adolescents.3 The awareness rate of AIDS related knowledge could be increased greatly and the accurate rate of AIDS related attitude could be improved significantly after health education interventions. The first three methods that could increase the scores of AIDS related knowledge were comprehensive intervention, peer education and lecture intervention respectively.Different health education intervention ways had a certain influence on AIDS related attitude among out-of-school adolescents.
