Objective:To study the clinical significance of plasma brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) levels in the patients with chronic cor pulmonale.Material and methods:The levels of BNP in plasma of 64 patients with chronic cor pulmonale who were hospitalized in Provincial Hospital affiliated to Shangdong University from July 2010 to March 2011 were detected by radio immunoassay. The SPO2 were detected at the same time. The basic disease of all patients is chronic bronchitis.Other cardiac disease, diabetes and so on were excluded. One sample t-test was used in comparision of the patients with population mean;Paired t-test for dependent samples was used in comparision of the patients before-treatment and post- treatment. Their correlations with PaO2 w -ere investigated with linear correlation analysis.Results:57 patients took a favourable turn after comprehensive therapy,7 patients died.1),The levels of plasma BNP in the acute and remission stages of cor pulmonale groups were both significantly higher[(5759.21±7975.263)pg/ml & (302.59±239.507) respectively] than those in the normal control group[125pg/L, respectively]. The levels of plasma BNP in the acute stage was significantly higher than those in the remission stage (all P<0.01).2),The levels of PaO2 in the acute stage was significantly lower than those in the remission stage[(6.81±1.70) Kpa & (10.56±1.00) Kpa, (P<0.01)].3),The levels of BNP is negative correlated with PaO2 both in the acute and remission stages, r=-0.61(P<0.01), r=-0.80 (P<0.01); 4),The level of plasma BNP in patients those died were outstanding elevated, (25781.86±9722.26) pg/ml.Conclusions:The level of plasma BNP in patients with chronic cor pulmonale was obvious elevated, and that decreased in remission stages. The level of plasma BNP in patients those died were outstanding elevated. We suggest BNP as a diagnostic, prognostic marker and as screening parameter for patients with chronic cor pulmonale. The levels of BNP is negative correlated with PaO2 both in the acute and remission stages,We conclude that BNP is upregulated proportionally during chronic hypoxia.
